Plastic Packaging Tax Exceeds Expectations: £276m Collected in First Year
UK's Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) collected £276m in its first year, exceeding government predictions. The PPT, a £200 per tonne levy on plastic packaging with less than 30% recycled content, was introduced in April 2022. It aims to encourage recycling and reduce plastic waste.
By August 2023, 4,142 businesses had registered for the PPT. However, experts suggest that some of the money collected should be reinvested in recycling and circular economy systems to accelerate sustainability efforts.
Additionally, they call for a long-term escalation of the PPT to boost recycled content usage in packaging.
